World Premier Coming to Tucson

Tucson-Roscommon Sister Cities is proud to announce it is sponsoring a cultural exchange in the form of a theatrical production written and produced in Ireland about the founding of Tucson.

El Capitán Colorado
(The Royal O’Conor)

El Capitan Colorado is a play written and produced in Ireland by Irish playwright Caroilin Callery depicting the life of a young Irishman who leaves his home in Ireland at age 16 never to return, destined to die without family, at age 44 in faraway Mexico. In the interim he became one of the most accomplished and distinguished military leaders in New Spain. That individual was Don Hugo O’Conor, Knight of the Order of Calatrava, Colonel of Infantry in his Majesty’s armies, and Commandant Inspector of the frontier posts of northern New Spain. His most lasting legacy: locating a new Presidio at San Augustin del Tucson on August 20, 1775. Today, the date is considered Tucson’s birthday and O’Conor its illustrious founder.

Not surprisingly the O’Conor story recounts the history of the Spanish Colonial period, with its missionaries, conquistadors, and Native tribes, in what is today southern Arizona. This adaptation will be the creation of a piece of literature on a most interesting character, for the historical canon of both Tucson and Ireland.

The play will come to Tucson with a cast of Irish actors for a run in early 2008. Performances are scheduled as follows:

World Premier at the Berger PAC (1200 W. Speedway) ~ Friday, February 29th at 7:00 PM
St. Pius X Arizona Hall (1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo) ~ Saturday, March 1st at 7:00 PM

A summary of 2005...

In 2005, Tucson-Roscommon Sister Cities launched an energetic campaign to revitalize the relationship with our sister community in Ireland. TRSC is now a membership based community organization, and we are mining the talents and interests of our members to bring information about contemporary Ireland to Tucson as well as exporting some of our local culture to Roscommon.

Throughout 2005 TRSC has participated in many activities including the Family Arts Festival in Tucson and the St. Patrick's Day luncheon, and Tucson’s Celtic Festival and Highland Games. We’ve also hosted a photographic and poetry exhibition from Roscommon, and a “Meet the Author” luncheon with Irish Author Jude Collins.
